Commitment Ceremonies

A commitment ceremony is a couple's public declaration of their devotion to one another,  that is witnessed by family and friends. They are similar to weddings and have deep personal, spiritual and social meaning for the couples involved.

There are no rules when it comes to commitment ceremonies - it’s all about you and your partner’s personal style and choice.

The content and style of each commitment ceremony is unique, tailored to the individual desires of each individual couple.  Commitment ceremonies may be small informal affairs, celebrated in a couple's home or garden, or they may be large black-tie events held in a contemporary art gallery or museum, followed by a reception in a resort, 5-star establishment or prestigious golf club.

Commitment ceremonies generally contain the following elements that may be arranged in different orders, added to, changed or not used at all:

Welcome Greeting

Whether you choose to bring all guests to attention with a change of music or a change in lighting, it's time for your special moment to begin.

The celebrant greets the guests and couple and usually says a few words about commitment in general, or something special about the couple's relationship.

Vows

The couple declare their intent to be committed to each other and define what the commitment means to them by expressing their beliefs and aspirations.

The couple may write their own vows or use existing vows for inspiration. The vows may be memorised and recited to each other, or read by the celebrant.

Music,  Songs, Poetry Readings

Consider famous quotes, religious elements, prayers, favourite songs (sung or spoken),  poetry or anything else that symbolises your love as inspiration,  such as the song you first danced to together.

Include special readings from family and friends for that extra special touch.

Exchange of Rings

Some couples exchange rings, others don't.

If  you are exchanging rings (or any other permanent token), consider also exchanging some words about what the rings symbolise, such as:

"I give you this ring as a symbol of our commitment today, and as a public statement to the world that I only love you."

Commitment Proclamation

The celebrant announces to the guests that the couple is now beloved friends, life partners or true companions the couple follows this proclamation with a kiss.

The Recessionial

The outpouring of joy from both the couple and guests is then released in many ways, such as the releasing of balloons, white doves or beautifully coloured butterflies, or the blowing of bubbles.

Whatever elements you incorporate or wherever it is held, your commitment ceremony is an expression of your love and the caring that you feel for each other and a celebration of that love, with your family and friends.

Ultimately, your commitment ceremony is an expression of your love openly with pride. Let the celebrations begin!
