Wedding Lingerie: What To Wear Under Your Wedding Dress

Wedding LingerieWhat you wear makes you feel special and glamorous. This is the one day you can feel like a real princess, so when choosing your bridal lingerie it needs to look beautiful and stylish.

The right lingerie worn under your wedding dress is critical in ensuring the perfect fit of the dress.  Bridal lingerie is not only a pretty and sexy piece of your bridal fashion; it plays an important role as the foundation for your wedding dress.  There are many factors to consider when shopping for bridal lingerie, so here are few tips to help you in your search for just the right pieces...

When to look. Start looking for your bridal lingerie only after you have selected your wedding dress as your wedding lingerie must compliment your gown.

Leave it to the professionals. Visit specialty lingerie retail shops.  They stock a wider variety and a higher quality of lingerie than most department stores. The best advice you can get is expert advice.  Specialty lingerie stores have staff with extensive experience in fitting bridal lingerie.  Tell them the style of your wedding dress and be professionally fitted by an expert.

You get what you pay for. It is recommended that you buy the best lingerie you can afford as your wedding lingerie will make all the difference to the overall final look of your wedding dress.

Wedding Dress Style. Wedding lingerie is the foundation of your wedding fashion look and of vital importance to the perfect fit and look of your wedding dress.  The most popular colours for wedding lingerie are nude and white as they are most suited to the traditional white and ivory gowns.  For modern brides experimenting with colours, consider matching colours or darker nudes.

Wedding Dress Fabric. Your wedding dress fabric is also an important consideration when choosing your wedding lingerie.  Bulky underwear is not suitable for thin, satiny gowns that show every curve. Select as few separates as possible to avoid visible lines and consider the famous Spanx body shapers - Oprah has raved about them for their slimming appeal.  Heavier wedding dress fabrics or wedding gowns with generous beading allow for figure enhancing bustiers and corsets with boning.  For wedding dresses with a corseted bodice, it is recommended that you wear a full corset or bustier underneath the dress to provide the proper support for the dress.  A bustier will provide smoother and more even lines than a bra and knickers.  Full corsets are perfect for strapless dresses that require very supportive under garments to hold up the dress.  Lacy bras are beautiful to look at, however they can result in ridges that are visible on the outside of wedding dresses made from softer flowing fabrics.  A better option is a smooth satin bra.

Wedding LingerieWOW factor. What is worn underneath the gown attracts just as much attention after the wedding day proceedings have concluded. There is no other more special time to slip into something sheer, sensual and sexy, as on the wedding night.  If not on your wedding night then when? These days, most bustiers and corsets designed to be worn underneath a wedding dress are sexy.

Comfort. Be very comfortable, as you will be wearing your bridal lingerie all day.  There is nothing worse than readjusting your lingerie in front of your wedding guests or distracting you from performing that amazing samba you have practiced for months.  Wear comfortable and practical bridal lingerie in the day, and then change into something more glamorous at night.  That way, you can look your best all day and not worry about things showing or riding up.

Where and When. The time of day or night and the wedding location of the wedding are also an important consideration in choosing what to wear under your wedding dress.  For a chilly winter’s night, consider something that covers a little more skin such as an all-in-one body shaper.  For a beach or outdoor summer wedding, you will want to wear as little as possible under your dress to minimise sweat and discomfort.  A strapless bra and satin knickers will suit perfectly.

Hosiery. The final thing to select for your wedding lingerie is your hosiery.  If you decide to do full pantyhose, make sure that it fits well and does not cause any discomfort or bulging. The best and most fun hosiery to wear is stockings with a garter.  Whatever hosiery you decide on, make sure that the fabric is premium quality so that it doesn't tear or snag.  It's best to buy an extra set, just in case.

Something New, Something Blue. When shopping for the perfect wedding lingerie, you may wish to incorporate the "something old, something new; something borrowed and something blue” into it. Consider making part of your bridal lingerie your something new or something blue such as your garter.

Test Drive. Try on your wedding lingerie well before your wedding day just to make sure it fits properly. Sit down in it and bend over in it.  Ensure your straps stay up.  If you don't have straps, then ensure your bra or bustier stays in place and check that those garter straps stay in place as you move.

Relax. Once you've chosen your underwear, or changes of underwear if you are going with a different option for the wedding night, wash them as instructed on the label to help soften and freshen them up. Your body will be glad you did!
